Building a Hijabi haircare community
In 2021, I struggled to find haircare content tailored to Black Muslim women with type 4 hair—especially content that accounted for wearing hijab. Most resources centered type 2 or 3 hair or ignored the unique challenges of modest haircare. This gap made it difficult to find practical, faith-aligned guidance.

I surveyed 31 Black Muslim women ages 16–32 across four countries to understand their biggest haircare challenges, current solutions and interest in community-based learning. The data challenged several of my assumptions and highlighted unmet needs around education, consistency, and representation.

I designed a community-focused website with a clear mission, newsletter signup, and upcoming events to support shared learning.
Key Takeaway
Although the project didn’t launch fully, it solidified my interest in UX research and reinforced the importance of letting data—not assumptions—guide product decisions.
