Project background
In 2021, I struggled with finding content that me and other Black Muslim women with type 4 hair could use to learn how to take good care of our hair. Most content creators/influencers had type 2 or 3 hair or didn't wear the hijab. Knowing that wearing the hijab comes with it's unique challenges for haircare, I decided to build this community.
The problem
Black Muslim women struggle with finding tips to take care of their hair when they search the web. Our design will provide an online community for people to learn and share tips on how to take care of their type 4 hair while obeying Allah's commands.
The process
I created a survey to get to the root of what Black Muslim women were struggling with.
The aim of the survey was to find out what people struggle with the most, the scale at which they struggle and how they were solving for them in the meantime. I received 31 responses including women from 4 countries across the globe, between 16 - 32 years old.
Here are a few of the questions that produced the most insightful answers:
Do you know how to braid/twist hair?
How often do you do/redo your protective styles?
Are there any Instagram, Facebook, Twitter accounts that help you take care of your hair?
What is your biggest struggle with taking care of your hair?
Would you be open to joining a community of women who are interested in learning about how to take care of their hair?

The proposed solution
Based on the survey responses, I created a website that includes a clear purpose of the community, a newsletter subscription section and a list of upcoming events.
